artist profile georgia james clarke

A mixed-media artist whose current work creatively combines painting and drawing with digital photography and computer graphics.

Primarily self-taught since 1985, my career began with decorative painting and faux finishes on furniture and walls. These efforts developed into a business having commercial, retail and residential clients for about 10 years. In 1998, I resumed working artistically moving from commercial to a more personal creative level. Working specifically on canvas and paper in a variety of mediums and exploring random subject matter.

“Also during this time, I developed an interest in digital photography, computers and digital image processes. These tools have allowed me to capture many more varieties of subject matter; and play with compositions and scale on a level I had been unable to satisfy. At present, I believe all my creative ideas are beginning to blend. Generally, I work on a large scale and have finally found a combination of tools that fit my mind, hands and energy.”

“Inspiration comes from everywhere—personal collections of ‘things’—mine, family and friends, the title of a book, nature, travels, commissions and creative missions.”

Media and processes consistently shift and evolve to explore new inspirations, and challenge boundaries.
“Consistent in my work is a life-long fascination to capture what I ‘see’ and feel—things and ideas—which I perceive have potential—and then record them. Turning the ordinary into extraordinary. Exposing the beauty in the over-looked, the mundane—making it important. When drawing, for example, I seek to strip away the obvious, find the strong lines—the core lines supported by few others—that reflect the energy of the person and the pose. Similarlily, when photographing landscapes I may try to capture the whole or a small area—whatever will capture the essence. An effort to bring to the viewer just as I saw it at the time. Sharing those finds. Not consistent in my output are the processes. Mixing experiences with painting, drawing, photography and graphics, I am always challenging myself to experiment with new and different methods to express ideas.”
